The BDA network was founded in Canada on the initiative of Carole Robert. Its starting point: Africa holds a major share of the world's botanical resources but captures only a tiny fraction of their value. Its answer, “Trade, not Aid”: train local ecopreneurs and connect them directly with regulated markets. Active in the DRC since 2010, the network has built a training campus, a packaging centre and a laboratory in Luki, through a €2.7 million programme co-financed by the Congo Basin Forest Fund (2012–2018). The model was presented at the United Nations as a model access and benefit-sharing programme (COP10, Nagoya, 2010). Today, BDA Global holds the BDA programmes and coordinates initiatives in nine African countries: Morocco, the DRC, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Mauritius, Burundi, Senegal and Niger.
An official, recognised anchor in the BDA ecosystem
Founded in Rabat in 2022, BDA Horizons is the first organisation affiliated with the BDA network in North Africa. Its framework agreement with BDA Global designates it as the official representative of BDA Global in Morocco and in its other countries of operation. This role was recognised in Morocco by the Department of Sustainable Development, under the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development, through an agreement signed in October 2026.

Governance and organisation
The Board of Directors sets the strategic direction and ensures the mission is upheld. It is supported by an Advisory Board of figures chosen for their expertise and influence. Activities are organised into divisions, with a Decarbonisation division now being launched.

Aromatic and medicinal plant value chains, agroecology, farm schools and ecosystem restoration.
Rural Development and Inclusion Division
Eco-entrepreneurship, cooperatives, financial inclusion, heritage and intergenerational dialogue.
BDA Horizons applies policies aligned with international donor requirements: a code of ethics, an anti-corruption policy, a gender equality policy, an environmental and social safeguards policy and a conflict-of-interest policy.
